August 7, 2025 East Helena Smelter Site Team Presents at National Brownfields Conference

Montana Environmental Trust Group joined representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 8, the City of East Helena, the Prickly Pear Land Trust, and the Helena Area Habitat for Humanity to present a session titled “Rewriting the East Helena Story: The Revival of a Montana Company Town in the Age of ‘Yellowstone’ ” on August 7, 2025, at the National Brownfields Training Conference in Chicago. Results of East Helena Slag Community Survey, Feb 2025

METG distributed and shared a community survey about the recycling and capping work at the East Helena slag pile in December 2024. As of February 2025, there have been approximately 50 responses. See a summary of responses here.

Nov. 6, 2024 Public Meeting Presentation and Recording

METG cohosted a public meeting on November 6 and drop-in availability session on November 7 to provide 2024 updates about the former ASARCO Smelter Site in East Helena. The meeting included presentations from the METG project team and project partners such as the City of East Helena, Prickly Pear Land Trust, Oakland Companies, and Helena Area Habitat for Humanity.

East Helena Smelter Site Public Meeting and Drop-in Session

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Montana Environmental Trust Group (METG), Trustee of the Montana Environmental Custodial Trust, are hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, November 6 at 6:30 pm to provide information about cleanup and redevelopment progress at the former ASARCO Smelter in East Helena. Representatives from EPA and METG, and their project partners, will provide updates on groundwater quality, slag pile activities, and property redevelopment. 

EPA and METG will also host a community drop-in session on Thursday, November 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Come by anytime to meet one-on-one with project representatives and ask questions.

Manlove Avenue is near the former ASARCO Smelter Site. It is located south of Highway 12 and parallel to the highway and the railroad tracks. Manlove Avenue intersects Highway 282 across from American Chemet.

From Helena, take Highway 12 east. Go right onto Highway 282 South. Take first right onto Manlove Ave.

From Townsend, take Highway 12 west. Go left onto Highway 282 South. Take first right onto Manlove Ave.

From Montana City, take Highway 282 north. Go left onto Manlove Ave. (last street before Highway 12).

Look on the left for the green modular building with the METG logo.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Montana Environmental Trust Group (METG), Trustee of the Montana Environmental Custodial Trust, are hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. MT. EPA, METG and their project partners will review cleanup and reuse progress and plans at the former ASARCO Smelter Site in East Helena, Montana. The meeting will provide the public an important opportunity to learn and ask questions about remediation and redevelopment of the former ASARCO lands in East Helena.
